The Asia Pacific Network for Scholarship in Medical Education (APNetSME) was established at a special meeting held during the Asia Pacific Medical Education Conference (APMEC) in Singapore on 14 January 2012. The meeting was co-chaired by Dr. Hiroshi Nishigori (Japan), Dr. Dujeepa Samarasekera (Singapore) and Dr. Gominda Ponnamperuma (Sri Lanka).
To foster a sustainable innovation and scholarship in Medical/Health Professional Education in the Asia Pacific Region.
To foster medical education research from a regional point of view based on context relevance and beliefs. APMENet see itself as developing synergistic relationships that will drive medical education research and development in the region and globally.
To provide a scholarly platform for medical/health professional educators in the Asia Pacific region to initiate, facilitate, and conduct collaborative work in Medical/Health Professional Education.
Establish a sustainable platform for ongoing collaborative activities
Support activities in which more senior educators mentor and support more junior mentors
Establish guidelines for fair and equitable remuneration policies for activities (taking into account financial situations of countries and institutions)
Advocate continuously the values, beliefs and norms guiding medical education research in different geographical and cultural context
Foster regional platforms for discussing scholarly work
To initiate and/or support projects related to Medical/Health Professional Education of member countries.
To exchange experiences on Medical/Health Professional Education related activities in member countries
To explore how pedagogical theories developed mainly out of Asia can be applied to the local context
To support and conduct collaborative research in Medical/Health Professional Education
To maintain quality assurance through peer-review of academic activities
To support Medical/Health Professional Education academic programmes (e.g. workshops, symposia, conferences, academic programmes) of member countries through sharing of resources.
The term ‘Medical/Health Professional Education’ is used in the broadest sense to include any activity that is related to undergraduate, postgraduate or continuing education in medicine and allied health sciences.
The term ‘Asia Pacific Region’ refers to the countries in the Asian (including the Middle Eastern countries) and Australian continents.
