Age Of Fantasy

What if Age of Empires 2 was not based in the real worlds history?

Many awesome people in the community have created mods that touched on some form of fantasy in AoE2. Some, have even painstakingly brought specific worlds to life. Recreating some of the greatest fantasy literature ever produced. In scenario or in data mods AoE2hd has given life to Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and many, many more...

Well, This isn't that.

But, what this is, is a 31 civilization overhaul of the entire game loosely based on a little bit of all fantasy culture. To create its own Age of Empires fantasy Realm.

Play RPGs? We certainly have a lot of that. Read Forgotten Realms or World of Warcraft? Got a bunch of that too. Do you love Sword and Sorcery movies like Conan or Beastmaster? Cartoons like Avatar? Shows like Game of Thrones? Yup, that's all in here as well.

Whatever your fantastic genre its probably got some reference or inspiration in here.

But one thing this is NOT, is just a re-skin of the game.

So, If you're like some of us, and have played this RTS since the MSN zone, and even built a $3000 computer just to put in hundreds of hours in on a game made in 1999,

We Salute you.

And whether you are new to the game or If you have you played AoE since you first started gaming on a computer,

Welp, this Mods for you!

Whats in the Mod?

Well to begin with there are 31 unique civilizations. You will recognize many of the bonuses, and many of the civilization attributes. Even many of the unit graphics are the same. But don't expect the civilizations to behave the same. There is no historical reference in a fantasy game.

The balance is also tinkered with to reflect a fantasy environment where Wizards and Dragons can exist. There are units with magical armor, and units that fly. There are Monsters and Heros. All carefully created to maintain a new balance, that ensures the game isnt broken and no single civilization is over-powered.

Then there is the late game disparity. We carefully preserved the early game razor sharp balance for players who prefer the 1v1 Arabia or Black Forest experience. As the game progresses however the late game unit power becomes very apparent. Imperial age "Trash" wars are likely to become extremely rare. Late game stalemates even rarer.

But, the beauty of this mod is actually team play. Each Civilization (barring 1 very special civ) is part of an EMPIRE. Each Empire is made up of 3 civilizations that have shared bonuses and units. Those bonuses are often related and have synergy with each other, compounding Empire Specific bonuses. Being creative with what civilizations you ally with will do a lot toward either eliminating some weaknesses or multiplying some strength.

Lastly, The resources have been altered to dramatically affect the effectiveness of the spawned in starting resources. There will be a much greater variety of ways for many civilizations to sustain themselves even into the late game aside from traditional farming.

Maps

Maps for the aesthetic minded people. Yes, of course we created an Entire world just for the mod. Why half step? Some very interesting future ideas planned based on this should the mod popularity really take off.

Monsters

There are some very unique monsters we created for this as well. As well as some very interesting unit transformations. Herein lies a brief explanation of how Unique Units work. Both Shared and Civilization Specific.

Magic

Magic can transform Warfare. As such AOE2 HD is based on 8 range being the standard long range. Not in AoF. The range mechanics have been modified to more represent a fantastic battlefield

Civilizations

There is certainly a rich variety of different civilizations available in a fantasy setting. We used the AOE2HD Expansions as the benchmark and take you in a direction that can only be described as fantastic.

Art

Nothing sets the mood like some good artwork. Some of the very civ bonuses were inspired by artwork just like those that will be credited here. The first artist featured is Dean Spencer

Collaborators

No one creates anything alone. Even ideas need inspiration. Nothing could have gotten done without the help of people not only as part of a team but those who lent advice, play-tested or just generally supported.
