Low-Contrast Tracking of Ants in the Field

This example shows the application of AnTracks to detect and track forager ants in the field, as part of ongoing research on ant colony behavior in the lab of Prof. Deborah Gordon, Stanford University. The video data are property of Prof. Deborah M. Gordon, Dept of Biology, Stanford University. Data used with friendly permission.

Because of the low contrast to the soil and the small size of the ants, this is a challenging application where most other tracking software fail.

There are 47 ants in this video frame. They are barely visible to the eye.

The movement detector identifies potential objects...

...which are then classified as real ants and false positives.

The ants are tracked and their movement trajectories are recorded.
