Reparation Actions

In our personal lives, we may make reparation when we've intentionally or unintentionally hurt someone. We find ways to repair the harm done, make amends, bring good to the relationship. Similarly, people who have benefited from harm done to others can take actions to make up for historic and continuing loss, cumulative disadvantage, injustice and harm. Returning uncontaminated land and water to the control of Indigenous people is one type of reparation. 

Here are some resources to consider:

• Video by Ben Carniol - This video was created as part of Decolonizing Journeys Online Story-Making Workshop held online from November 2, 2021 to December 11, 2021. (10 minutes)

• Friends are making history by returning 232 acres of ancestral land to the Nisenan tribe in California, the original stewards of the land currently known as the Woolman Center. Please consider supporting this important land back initiative and help the Nisenan people re-establish their connection to this sacred place.

• The Motherhouse Series: This series explores how to reorganize society around Mother Law, which centers on caretaking and right relationship with all living beings. It challenges viewers to remove their complicity in systems of oppression and domination culture, and aims to help viewers reclaim their authority and live in accordance with the Mother Law within their own cultures and lineages. Mother Law and Complicit No More are concepts inspired by the Haudenosaunee tradition by Mama Bear, a Bear Clan Mother of the Mohawk Nation, and Michelle Shenandoah. They discuss the importance of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy's Great Law of Peace and the influence of Haudenosaunee women on the suffrage movement.
