Two Sentence Summary:
Hello! My name is Rhianen and I am your Vice President for the 2021-2022 school year. I aspire to expand the knowledge of anthropology around campus and create a better community among anthropology students.
Courses:

Freshman Year:
Anth 1: Introduction to Culture. This course is what inspired me to add sociocultural anthropology as my double major. I was introduced to beginning terms and theory practices, but most important global health, social, and political issues.
Sophomore Year:
HILD 7A: Race and Ethnicity in the United States. My first introduction to a lower division within my majors, and my first introduction to a humanities class. Easily one of my favorite classes.
ANSC 120: Religion and Culture. We studied theories surrounding rituals and applied them to case studies. For our final project we worked on our own research paper on a ritual we have witnessed, I decided to research restorative justice circles.
ANSC 125: Gender, Sexuality, and Society. We studied multiple case studies from around the world and worked to apply class concepts to understand how gender and sexuality are affected by societal norms.
ANTH 102: Humans Are Cultural Animals. As this course is required for all anthropology majors to learn about biological anthropology. I was fascinated by behavior development and its connections to mental health.
ANSC 150: Culture and Mental Health. We analyzed mental health from multiple cultures to shape our understanding of how society affects mental health. We read theory and applied it to case studies given, as well as conducting a group project about a current event connected to mental health. My group decided to study mental health and fandoms.
HINE 144: Topics in Middle Eastern History. We studied various topics of Middle Eastern History from the 19th-20th century and the effects of colonialism in the region.
Organizations:
Associated Students - Arts and Humanities Academic Senator. I have been elected to represent all arts and humanities students on campus in our school-wide student government. My job is to advocate for their needs, serve on committees, create projects/hold events, and regularly interact with our community
Chancellor’s Scholar. I work with the Chancellor’s Scholar Program as a part of the scholarship that I received from the school upon entering.
Extracurriculars:
Anthropology Department - Intern. I have interned for the Anthropology Department, with our mission to find out how we can better the Anthropology program for its students. I and two fellow students worked alongside Dr. Varma to create a survey, interpret and code its data, and present our findings to the Anthropology department
After Graduation:
I would like to pursue a career in teaching, and I imagine I will be going to grad school.
