The Goals any School Guidence Program should hold true:
As a school counselor, my primary goal is to develop a student-centered, comprehensive, and equitable school counseling program that empowers every student to recognize their strengths, develop their individual voice, overcome barriers, and successfully prepare for life beyond the classroom. My approach to school counseling is grounded in student-driven growth, purposeful mentoring, advocacy, collaboration, and the belief that every student has the capacity to succeed when provided with meaningful opportunities and appropriate support.
Academic Growth & Student Success
My goal is to support the academic development of every student by helping them recognize their strengths, identify challenges, establish meaningful goals, and develop the skills necessary to become increasingly independent learners. I will collaborate with students, families, teachers, administrators, and other educational professionals to identify barriers to achievement and create strategies that promote engagement, perseverance, accountability, and academic success.
Rather than simply telling students what they need to accomplish, I want students to become active participants in determining how they will accomplish it.
Social & Emotional Development
I will create a counseling environment where students feel safe, respected, heard, and valued. Through individual counseling, small-group counseling, classroom instruction, mentoring, and schoolwide initiatives, I will help students develop self-awareness, emotional regulation, healthy communication, decision-making, conflict-resolution skills, resilience, and positive relationships.
An important goal of my counseling practice is to help students understand that asking for support is a strength and that challenges can become opportunities for growth, reflection, and personal development.
College, Career & Life Readiness
Every student should graduate with more than academic knowledge. My goal is to help students understand the connection between their interests, abilities, education, and future opportunities.
Students will be encouraged to explore multiple pathways, including college, career and technical education, military service, apprenticeships, entrepreneurship, and direct entry into the workforce. My responsibility is not to determine a student's future for them, but to provide the information, resources, experiences, encouragement, and mentorship necessary for students to make informed decisions about their own futures.
Student-Driven Counseling & Mentorship
A central goal of my counseling philosophy is to ensure that students have an active voice in their educational and personal development. I believe counseling is most effective when it is something accomplished with students rather than for students.
I will develop authentic relationships built upon trust, consistency, respect, and high expectations. Through mentorship, students will be encouraged to recognize their individual strengths, take appropriate risks, learn from setbacks, advocate for themselves, and develop confidence in their ability to make meaningful decisions.
Equity, Access & Advocacy
I will advocate for every student's right to meaningful educational opportunities, resources, support, and a sense of belonging. I will use student data, observations, collaboration, and student voice to identify barriers and opportunity gaps that may prevent students from reaching their potential.
Particular attention will be given to ensuring that students in rural communities have access to academic, career, artistic, technical, and postsecondary opportunities that may not otherwise be readily available.
Collaboration & Community
Effective school counseling cannot occur in isolation. My goal is to build meaningful partnerships among students, families, educators, administrators, community organizations, mental health professionals, postsecondary institutions, and employers.
By creating strong connections between the school and the larger community, I will work to expand opportunities available to students while developing a network of support that extends beyond the school building.
Data-Informed & Comprehensive Counseling
I will continually evaluate the effectiveness of the school counseling program through student outcome data, needs assessments, feedback, program evaluation, and measurable goals. Counseling initiatives should not simply exist because they have always been done; they should have a clear purpose and demonstrate a meaningful benefit to students.
Consistent with the principles of the ASCA National Model, I will use data to identify student needs, establish priorities, evaluate interventions, advocate for resources, and continually improve the counseling program.
My ultimate goal as a school counselor is not simply to help students graduate—it is to help them leave school knowing who they are, what they value, what they are capable of accomplishing, and how to move forward when life does not go according to plan.
Success will be measured not only by grades, attendance, graduation rates, and college acceptance, but also by the development of confident, resilient, compassionate, responsible, and self-directed young people who understand that their future belongs to them.
My goal is to educate when knowledge is needed, counsel when challenges arise, advocate when barriers exist, mentor when guidance is needed, and empower students until they recognize that they can advocate for themselves
PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY
If you think you are beaten, you are.If you think you dare not, you don’t
If you like to win but think you can’t,
It’s almost a cinch you won’t.
If you think you’ll lose, you’re lost.
For out in the world we find
Success begins with a fellow’s will
It’s all in the state of mind.
If you think you are outclassed, you are.
You’ve got to think high to rise.
You’ve got to be sure of yourself before
You can ever win the prize.
Life’s battles don’t always go
To the stronger or faster man.
But sooner or later, the man who wins
Is the man who thinks he can.
