Because technology is dynamic, our understanding of the most effective and responsive means to connect with students must be as dynamic. Ongoing professional development, then, is a central component to effective online teaching.
When I first taught an online class, I hit the ground running. Even though I felt like I "survived" the semester, I didn't feel proud of my class. I also did not have much experience teaching online. So, I began to look for professional development opportunities to learn more about how to teach online.
Since my first online class three years ago, I have earned a certificate in online teaching and design. And, I am now working on a certificate in advanced online principles. I am consistently updating my online courses and working to improve how I connect with students. In addition, I support the Distance Education (DE) office on my campus by drafting the local POCR process, reporting to the DE committee, and serving as a resource to the Dean of Distance Education.
I am working toward having all of my online classes certified through the local Peer Online Course Review process at my college. In addition, I would like to create a stronger digital presence by offering resources and support in my YouTube channel and build my twitter presence in the context of online learning.
The Fall 2017 semester was the first time I taught online. I had very little online teaching experience and had only completed an introduction to teaching online with Etudes course. Since then, I have participated in over 15 professional development classes that has transformed the way I teach in person and online. As a lifelong learner, I am interested in pursuing more teaching and learning courses and will be applying to Ed.D programs next year. To see some of my professional development experiences, please see the digital badges I have been awarded.
I am also excited to have used the @One IOTL OER shell as the foundation for creating an IOTL course for a my college to use as a template for when we offer this course. In addition, during the transition to remote learning due to COVID-19, I had the opportunity to offer in person and Zoom training. I would like to continue to offer training to faculty in the future. And, I aspire to be an @One instructor.
I am also on the Guided Pathways Team on my campus and I am working on the 4th pillar: Ensure Learning. In addition, I am also the campus SLO coordinator. Therefore, I am working under both these hats to develop an ePortfolio project and digital badges for student competencies on our campus. This project was inspired by developing this portfolio and earning the badges I have received through @One. To give an example of how I have supported the use of technology and online teaching principles in my leadership positions on campus, please see the 8th Annual SLO Symposium focusing on ensuring learning and assessment.
