"The ability to read, write, and analyze; the confidence to stand up and demand justice and equality; the qualifications and connections to get your foot in that door and take your seat at that table -- all of that starts with education" -Michelle Obama
I am driven by the obligation I feel we have to support others--especially those who are traditionally underserved.
Hello! I'm Anthony,
Growing up in the New York City area, I learned from a young age, the power of a high quality education and the reality that not everyone gets this privilege. Inspired by people around me who dedicated their lives to helping others and serving their communities, I felt an obligation to enter a career that would support people to reach their full potential and empower individuals to use their voices and advocate for themselves and others.
Today, I am an Assistant Professor of Communication Studies & Vice Chair of the Language Arts Division at West Los Angeles College.
Aside from these positions, I also serve as our campus's Student Learning Outcome (SLO) Coordinator, Guided Pathways Navigator and ASCCC OER Liaison. I am also an online educator.
My initial introduction to online teaching was rushed, last-minute and required me to hit the ground running. After my first semester, I took a step back and reflected on my experiences and how I wanted to address teaching online in the future. I came to the conclusion that the best way for me to be and feel successful was to pursue online professional learning opportunities. In the last few years, I have taken over 15 online professional development courses and received a certificate in Online Teaching & Design. Being a student while also teaching students is humbling and this experience has positively influenced how I support students with empathy, understanding, care and respect.
This online portfolio showcases the work I have completed to earn a certificate in Advanced Online Teaching Practices. These experiences have transformed the way in which I strive to facilitate learning in an online environment.
