Optional Extras

offered by Antarctica21

Below you'll find details on the two options offered by Antarctica21 that are the most time-sensitive to book, if interested.

SEA KAYAKING in ANTARCTICA

$895 per person

Experience Antarctica from the unique vantage point of a sea kayak. The majestic landscape, the icebergs, the wildlife... everything looks different as you paddle quietly through the waves. A unique experience!

THE PROGRAM

The sea kayaking program is an optional small-group experience limited to a maximum of 10 participants. The group enjoys multiple excursions throughout the voyage, under the guidance and leadership of an experienced Kayak Master

Every day in Antarctica, your Kayak Master will work with the Expedition Team to look for the best kayaking opportunities based on suitable and safe weather conditions. The group will be supported by a dedicated safety Zodiac. Each kayaking excursion will last approximately one and a half hours. The Kayak Master will strive to offer some time at the landing site so you can also explore on land.

To take part in the kayaking program you must have previous experience and must know how to swim. The minimum age for participation is 16 years. Space is limited.

Note: Sea Kayaking is offered as a full program of excursions delivered throughout the expedition to the same group of participants. It is not possible to join individual, one-off kayaking excursions, nor to rotate participation among family members or groups of friends traveling together.

CONDITIONS: Payment of the above participation fee is due at the time of reservation. In the case of cancellation 120 days or more prior to departure, Antarctica21 will refund 50% of the participation fee. In the case of cancellation 119 days or less prior to departure, there will be no refund.

Additional details if you may be seriously considering it:

(1) This detailed presentation Antarctica21 sent us from a previous season may be worth a look.

(2) The $895 fee for kayaking essentially reserves the kayak for someone throughout the trip and they can elect to go out on it as many or as few times as they like. Per our understanding, the additional equipment and staff needed for are what the costs go to. Going ashore is still often possible when kayaks are used; it simply depends on the length of the landing.

(3) We had guests that participated in this program in December 2019, on a trip that both Temu Nana and OSE owner Alex Ros were on. Alex additionally attended the dedicated kayaking briefings while onboard, and spoke at length with the kayak instructors. We feel well equipped to answer questions for those interested.

(4) Helpful feedback from a colleague that recently did it:

Kayaking is a super popular program, and receives the highest positive comments of the trip. In general, the ship aims to visit locations with the calmest possible weather, and the itinerary is selected to avoid poor weather where possible. The advantage with Kayaking is the perspective from the ocean, with a quiet experience sailing among the wildlife and ice. I myself did the kayaking a month ago, and although I was afraid of flipping the kayak, it was an easy ride and an experience that most people should do.

  • Weather permitting, Kayaking takes place twice a day.

  • There is typically a morning excursion, and after lunch, another excursion.

  • On some occasions, the “landing” is exchanged for a zodiac cruise, meaning all passengers go ashore by boat only, and then there are no kayaking or snowshoeing; it all depends on the terrain/circumstances.

  • Again, weather permitting, there are usually around 7 opportunities for a landing, which is when kayaking can take place. [this doesn't count the zodiac cruises...]

  • Participants who are signed up for Kayaking may choose to “skip” an excursion if they choose, and go ashore on the regular landings.

  • At times, the kayaking ends at the same landings where the majority of passengers went ashore, and they too will have the opportunity to walk on a trail marked by red flags. There will be a number of expedition staff on hand to indicate interesting items.

PREFERRED SEATING on the FLIGHT to ANTARCTICA

$495 per person

For an extra level of comfort, you can purchase Preferred Seats on your Antarctic flight.

This option offers you a guaranteed aisle or window seat at the front of the aircraft, and a guaranteed empty middle seat. It also offers you priority boarding in Punta Arenas and an amenities kit. Please note that due to the nature of the operation in Antarctica, priority boarding is not available on the return flight.

In the case of cancellation 120 days or more prior to departure, Antarctica21 will refund 50% of the price paid. In the case of cancellation 119 days or less prior to departure, there will be no refund.

Capacity is limited to rows 2, 3, 4 and 5 of the aircraft (in the diagram here these are the eight seats marked in orange; note the green seats remain empty)

> We recommend paying for this upfront if you would like to have it, given the limited availability.
