During March 6th-12th 2026 i rented Two Queen's gallery (as a member you can get a discount on doing this!) to try out an idea i had last autumn. i hadn't made anything phsyical for years and i really hated it lol. i do think i want to continue this series, though.
Foundations is a(n ongoing?) body of work exploring constructing the sense of self through characters witnessed on screen media as a child, by literally using construction materials as artistic medium.
I am reminded of the monologue from Oldboy “TV becomes your friend”. Our main character spent 15 years in a room with nothing but television. I spent my entire childhood with nothing but a TV and then later the unsupervised internet.
I definitely believe I learned how to interact with other people through watching their fictional interactions on screen.
What fictional characters shape our personality?
I was perhaps part of the first generation to have the media as a formative influence. Am I a real person or am I an amalgamation of characters I liked? What would it mean to be a real person, then?
The pieces are constructed crudely because of the level of skill I have. Does this echo fading memories? The characters are recognisable but not a perfect copy. Like the theory that each time we remember a memory it’s just a memory of a memory.
p.s. rly sad about how shit the sailor moon one looks lol. i wanted to hang it from the ceiling in the middle of the room </3
