LANGUAGE AND LITERACY
The foundation for communication, creative expression and critical thinking is
provided by language and literacy in early childhood development (Howard &
Mayesky , 2022 ).Stories ,dramatic play and emergent writing are all ways in
which children can explore ideas ,develop vocabulary and engage in imaginative
experiences (Isbell & Akiko – Yoshizawa ,2016). Literacy activities like shared
reading, phonemic awareness games and creative writing help children explore
language and meaning (Connor & Toper ,2015).Integrating language rich
environment with creative opportunities by educators fosters children’s ability
to express themselves through spoken ,written and visual storytelling ,which
enhances cognitive, social and emotional development ( Dinham & Chalk ,2018).
THEORIES AND PERSPECTIVES
Vygotsky’s (1978 ) sociocultural theory places emphasis on the importance of
social interactions in language development and emphasizes the importance of
scaffolding in creative literacy experiences (Howard & Mayesky ,2022).
According to Piagets (1952) theory, children build knowledge through
exploration leading to a dynamic and creative process of literacy ( Isbell & Akiko–
Yoshizawa ,2016). The Rosenblatt’s (1978) transactional theory of reading sees
reading as an interactive process of making meaning that is influenced by
personal experiences and creativity (Connor & Toper , 2015 ). Theoretical
arguments suggest that a curriculum for a creative literacy must include
storytelling ,dramatic play and multimodal communication to enhance
engagement and deep learning (Dinham & Chalk , 2018 ).
RESOURCES AND TECHNOLOGIES
Teachers can enhance the development of language and literacy by using books
that foster imaginative narratives ( Howard & Mayesky , 2022 ).Interactive e-
books and speech-to-text apps can be used through digital tools to provide
engaging multimodal experiences for young children (Connor & Toper, 2015).
Writing centers that offer materials such as journals, letter stamps and magnetic
letters supports emerging literacy (Isbell & Akiko –Yoshizawo ,2016 ).Children
can develop listening and comprehensive skills while creating their own digital
narrative through audiobooks and digital storytelling apps like ,Book Creator (
Dinham & Chalk ,2018 ).
LEARNING EXPERIENCES
0-2 years :sensory books and puppets are used in interactive storytime to engage children in oral language development (Howard & Mayesky ,2022).
2-3 years: using letter cards hidden in sensory bins for alphabet treasure hunts to encourage letter recognition (Connor & Toper,2015).
3-5 years :workshops that involve storytelling allow children to create and show their own picture books , improving their narrative skills (Isbell & Akiko-Yoshizawa,2016).
6-8 years :Book Creator and other apps allow children to write, recount and inspire their own stories through digital storytelling (Dinham & Chalk ,2018).
CREATIVE LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES
0-2 years – rhythm storytime and sound aids infants to traverse language trough tune by matching simple rhymes with clapping and movement , strengthening acoustic skills (Howard & Mayesky,2022).
2-3 years –creative and narrative thinking are boosted by children using illustrated story tunes to run and recount familiar stories (Connor & Toper,2015).
3-5 years –in puppet play storytelling, children construct and perform short puppet shows that are based on their short stories which promotes oral language and dramatic play (Isbell & Akiko-Yoshizawa,2016).
DIGITAL EVIDENCE
CRITICAL REFLECTION AND EVALUATION
My aptitude for storytelling ,expressive communication and versatility allows me to expedite inspired literacy experiences in early childhood education.I create an environment that fosters language accession and imaginative expression by combining dramat5ic play, collective storytelling and technology ( Howard & Mayeskay ,2022).Various media such as puppet shows, digital books can be used to inspire children to practice with storytelling which stimulates creativity and confidence (Isbell & Akiko-Yoshizawa,2016).My approach implicates scaffolding approach to make literacy actions handy and developmentally convenient (Connor & Toper,2015). Additionally my interest in digital storytelling tools ,which include correlative e-books and vitality software allow children to become operative craetos of their own narratives instead of idle consumers (Dinham & Chalk ,2018).By applying these techniques I am able to help children develop love for language while also elaborating their civil and sensitive abilities. To ensure diversity and representation in storytelling , aim to assimilate more ethically divergent literacy tools moving forward (Howard & Mayesky 2022).
