In the early seasons of the show, she is ashamed of her upbringing. She believes her past is boring and that she is nothing but an “ugly orphan” and a burden. Due to her being an orphan she has a troubling and abusive childhood as her past caretakers used her as an extra set of hands and punished her for messing up. She is often trying to change herself to be unique, telling Marilla to call her Cordelia or Penelope as she believes it is a better name then, “Plain Anne” and she insist of adding an E to the end to be more “distinguished”. She is a feminist and is often questioning her surroundings and societal norms. She loves literature and living in fantasies to escape from her current situation.
