My passion for Zumba started in 2010 when I joined as a participant. Back then, there weren’t many instructors available at my local leisure centre, and if the instructor was unavailable, the class would often be cancelled. In 2011, at the age of 49, I decided to take matters into my own hands. Having danced since I was 10, I took the leap and completed my Zumba instructor training.
That was the beginning of my journey as a fitness instructor. In March 2012, I added Zumba Gold to my qualifications, enabling me to teach Chair Zumba and low-impact classes, making fitness accessible to more people.
Next, I discovered Piloxing, a unique combination of boxing, Pilates, and ballet. I didn’t know much about it initially—except that it sounded intriguing—but it quickly became a favourite (even though I could barely walk after my first session!).
By 2014, new legislation required instructors to have an Exercise to Music qualification to secure insurance and work with local councils. While juggling full-time work and classes, I began an online course that suited my schedule. However, during this time, my mother was diagnosed with cervical cancer, and after her passing in May 2015, focusing on the course became a challenge. I eventually completed it before the guidelines changed, allowing me to continue my fitness journey.
Since then, I’ve expanded my expertise, becoming certified in various programs such as Step, Groove-It Fit, Fit on the Floor, Fit and Flow, and more recently, MoveMeditate. While I once taught Sh’bam, I chose to step away during COVID-19 as the program had shifted in ways that no longer inspired me. Now, I’m focusing on Walk Fit, a program I’m excited to bring to my community.
Although I started my instructor journey later in life, it has been an incredible experience. I’ve met so many amazing people along the way and love helping others discover the joy of fitness. For me, it’s not just about exercise—it’s about having fun, staying active, and building a supportive community.
