“Spillovers from Science to Technology”, with Ralf Martin, Arjun Shah and Dennis Verhoeven
Scientific knowledge creates value by serving as an input to technology development. Variation in such value across disciplines, institutions, and regions may inform efficient targeting of science funding. This project proposes a method to rank scientific output by the value of its knowledge spillovers to technology. Our algorithm uses the full patent-paper citation network to assign a portion of the private returns from patented inventions as spillovers from scientific publications. As such, it accounts for spillovers that affect R&D only through its effect on follow-on science, and for variation in the value of the (patented) innovations relying on science. We believe our measure can be applied to a range of questions studied by the economics of science community.
“Economic Impact of Universities in the UK: A Firm Level Analysis”
This paper studies how university growth impacts on local industry composition and productivity using panel data on firms and nearby university enrolments over the period 1997-2016. This spatial analysis reveals that university growth stimulates high-tech start-ups and the effects are stronger for higher quality, research intensive universities and areas of higher initial human capital. Employment effects are more muted, though smaller establishments appear to get larger as universities grow. On average, positive productivity impacts are found only in more high-tech intensive areas.
