I am a Distinguished Policy Fellow at the Centre for Economic Performance (CEP), Director of the CEP's Growth Programme, Deputy Director of the Programme on Innovation and Diffusion (POID) and an Associate of the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change. My research is focused on the drivers of productivity and innovation in firms and regions, and in particular the role of skills and universities in explaining differences in economic performance. Much of my work is focused on UK growth and industrial strategy, with a particular focus on policies for environmentally sustainable and inclusive growth.
I was a member of the Steering Group of the Resolution Foundation-CEP Economy 2030 Inquiry, funded by the Nuffield Foundation; a Commissioner for the RSA-Core Cities UK Urban Futures Commission, and a Research Director for the LSE Growth Commission.
Over 2024-2025 I have served as a member of the Council of Economic Advisers to the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rachel Reeves. I previously held a number of advisory roles for the UK government and policy institutions. These include membership of the previous Chancellor's Economic Advisory Council, the Office for Budget Responsibility Advisory Panel, the South Yorkshire Mayoral Economic Advisory Council, the Green Jobs Delivery group, the Research Development and Innovation (RDI) Organisational Landscape Review Sounding Board, BEIS R&D Places Advisory Group, and National Leadership Centre (Cabinet Office) Research Expert and Academic Advisory Panel.
I completed an ESRC Innovation Fellowship at the LSE in 2021, and obtained my PhD in Economics at the LSE in 2018. Previously, I was a manager at Deloitte's Economic Consulting practice, where I worked on economic regulation and business economics, and qualified as a Chartered Accountant (ACA).
