What is the STEM Symposium?
What is the STEM Symposium?
The Stem Symposim took place over the summer for one week long with six sister schools in six countries, Argentina, Japan, Peru, Taiwan, UK. I collaborated and build sisterhood with the participating students, and even got to take part in events such as Philly Mural Arts tour. We participated in problem-solving based courses that creatively address global issues using STEM concepts and skills. I enrolled in, Global Health Issues, and, Design A Wish courses. Dr. Mae Jemison, the first African American woman in space and founder and president of the Jemison Group and BioSentient Corp was the keynote speaker for the symposium. It was so amazing to end such an eye-opening week with Dr. Jemision, leaving us feel empowered and inspired to challenge ourselves.
Global Health Issues Course
In this course we focused on the ethical issues of conducting research on or working with marginalized/stigmatized populations, using theoretical frameworks and case studies. This includes investigations of ethical choices made by multinational, national and local policymakers, clinicians and researchers, and their impact on individuals, families and communities.
Design A Wish Course
In this course we learned to use the 3-D design app, SketchUp for Schools, on laptops by completing a series of projects that assists in fulfilling the wish of a child in the Make-A-Wish program. In the course it featured explorations into the design process to understand needs of a child in need in order to create designs that helps fulfill their wish. Finally, we created a fly-through video to use while presenting our design.
Philadelphia Mural Tour
Philadelphia is the world's most muraled city! We took walking tours given by the acclaimed Mural Arts Philadelphia group to switch gears towards appreciating the arts and how they have played a vital role in telling the stories of Philadelphia's history, heritage, and heroes.
