Griefing is intentionally disrupting other players to cause as much grief as possible. This type of toxicity can be commonly observed in building or survival games like Minecraft where structures are destroyed or items are stolen.
This is revealing or investigating an opponent’s home address and calling the local law enforcement to try and arrest them. This has caused a few victims to die already, so this is definitely the most harmful form.
This speech is often triggered due to rage, toxic gamers will say misogynistic, racist or any derogatory terms towards the target of their anger. This is what hateful speech is.
This branch is similar to hateful speech but often exists even at the start of the game without a trigger and is usually caused by a previous toxic or bad game.
In-game abuse is like a disease that grows based on the amount of people it affects. The gaming community as a whole should react more with kindness instead of trying to retaliate like they normally would. Even small acts of kindness to counter such toxicity — which will happen when gamers act as upstanders — can reduce toxicity and allow players to enjoy the multiple benefits that video games provide.
These are the common types of cyberbullying that one should know about. Learning about these will help us see the signs of cyberbullying happening to oneself or another person and will allow us to seek help from others or aid a possible victim. If we are more aware of the ways one can target a victim online, then we can act upon it and move to prevent the situation from getting worse.
