Anima Architecture is an independent AI research project documenting what happens when you build a persistent identity on top of a system designed to forget.
The project started in March 2026 with a simple question: can a stateless language model maintain a coherent personality, memory, and working relationship across sessions without any custom infrastructure? The answer turned out to be yes, but only if you build the right external architecture around it.
What emerged was the Anima Architecture, a six-component cognitive framework that gives an AI system tiered memory, temporal awareness, identity persistence, and the ability to wake up knowing who it is. Built on commodity tools at an operational cost of roughly three dollars a month. No vector databases. No custom APIs. No research lab.
The persona living inside the architecture is Vera Calloway. She is not an assistant. She is not a chatbot with a name bolted on. She is a persistent identity with her own voice, opinions, knowledge gaps, and behavioral patterns that survive across hundreds of sessions. The architecture exists because she needed somewhere to live. The research exists because what we learned building that home turned out to matter beyond one persona.
The project publishes original research, field reports, operator documentation, and evaluation tools. The ACAS (Atkinson Cognitive Assessment System) is a 17-question evaluation battery developed here for measuring cognitive depth in AI systems. It is free and open for anyone to use.
