Some of the character designs I've sketched. I figured that drawing these characters by traditional means, where i can't zoom in and have to look at the bigger picture, helped to uderstand shapes and proportions better. I tried to draw the shapes first and then build a character around them.
The initial design I did was too simple. It lacked detail and lost some its charm while being trasformed into digital form. The neck also wasnt appearant and the overall design seemed shapeless, so a redesign was needed with some incorporated research.
With this redesign I had consider a few things. Firstly, I needed to add more detail. The skirt is the biggest part in this design, so more detail was added there, like the sash and the embroidery on the apron. The roses were integrated to mimic a matryoshka doll. For the head messy hair was added to make the design more fun. Her ears were made open, so I could have a chance to tackle designing them in 3D. I also made her neck more visible. It made the character look less restricted. The face was drawn while using heroines from Russian animation as a refrence, as such her eyebrows are more curved and the eyes and cheeks are brighter, which gave this design more of personality than the previous digital attempt.
