NAF Engineering Academy

NAF Mission Statement

The Burbank Unified School District NAF Academy provides a program grounded in academics and technology to inspire students to become responsible members of society. It involves high quality instruction, community service, shadowing experiences, and internships so that students can graduate with the knowledge needed to succeed in college, in their careers, and in the rest of life.

NAF Engineering Academy Mission Statement

Empowers students to understand how systems work, solve challenging problems, and how to engineer new things. Aids in educational growth through hands-on experience with modeling, building, robotics, 3D printers, power tools, and electrical circuits.

NAF Engineering Academy Courses

Introduction to Engineering

Introduction to Engineering is a course that equips students with the fundamentals of engineering. In this class we learned the basics of electrical circuits, listened from guest speakers, learned CAD software such as OnShape, designed a cantilever, designed a popsicle stick bridge, and made a electrical guitar from a wooden plank. This course was my first experience in a formal engineering class. It opened my eyes to the many career paths within engineering, and provided a good introduction to the subject through interactive projects and valuable group experiences.

Principles of Engineering

Principles of Engineering is a course that builds off of Introduction to Engineering and further develops the elements of the curriculum. Although the entirety of this class has been taught in the online learning environment, we have been able to explore the various engineering professions (mechanical, electrical, petroleum, aerospace, biomedical, civil, etc) and the educational background one must possess to succeed in each respective profession. We have utilized the CAD software called OnShape to design various models, including the racecar and toolbox shown below. Although this class was online, I learned a lot about the many avenues within engineering and how to continue learning in the virtual setting through online design software and video demonstrations.

AP Physics 1

In AP Physics 1 we focus on a few core principals of physics which include kinematics, dynamics, circular motion & gravitation, energy, momentum, simple harmonic motion, torque & rotational motion, electric charge & electric force, DC circuits, and mechanical waves & sounds. Through lectures and lab activities we work towards an understanding of these principals. This foundation gave me a better understanding of how the physics of our world plays into events and gave me a new realization of them.

Computer Science

This course gives an introduction to HTML and Java programming through the approach of replicating programs which involves thinking backwards. This means understanding what lines of code led to the result shown and involves solving the problems that may come when trying to do so. Even though I intend on going in to mechanical engineering, this background will help me problem solve in the future and some of the concrete pieces of information may actually come in handy.

Projects

Racecar Design

This is a virtual chassis for a car project worked on in the Engineering Academy. The room in the middle is measured to suit two battery packs, and motors. Their is space to add 4 wheels placed on metal axels that go through the holes visible on the sides of the car.

Tool Box Design

Virtual model of a toolbox with the exact dimensions useful in real life towards creating this toolbox.

Popsicle Stick Bridge

Popsickle stick bridge made in the method you would design a truss. The objective with this project was to test which design of the truss amongst the class would be capable of supporting the greatest amount of weight at its center.

Guitar Project

This is a single string guitar designed using a variety of power tools to achieve this product.

NAFTrack Certification Progress

The image to the left shows my current progress towards NAFTrack Certification. I have completed the Introduction to Engineering course, AP Physics 1, and Principles of Engineering as well as my internship at the Raytheon Future Ready Engineers Program. I am currently working on completing the Computer Science course, to achieve complete NAFTrack Certification.
