ENC 5705: Student Writing Editing Assignment
This assignment focused on providing feedback to student writing. One of the challenges of feedback is the usage of its "power" and the effect it has on the student. The question becomes, how do we provide rigor while pushing the students forward without holding them back?
While the assignment exercise was initially given without any context of what phase of the project the student was in throughout the course (draft 1, draft 2, etcetera), the feedback was based on a drafting phase. I provided comments meant to have the student self-evaluate some of the content of the sources used versus what they wrote and how they wrote it on the paper. I also commented on aspects of their writing that demonstrated a connection to rhetorical analysis . I took the editing paragraph by paragraph to analyze for a connection to rhetorical appeals, then stepped back to assess each topic sentence for fluence of their topic and then selected details in each paragraph that were either off topic, disjointed, opinionated and/or lacking evidence from their sources. I added question-formatted comments to have the students think about specific decision to enhance the topic of their writing.
