Push-In Lessons

[Everyone Counts]

For this lesson, I was able to speak too all of second grade and discuss the importance of self awareness and acceptance. Initially, I read the story "Zero" By Kathryn Otashi that focused on the number zero and how she found acceptance for her own shape. Following, the students then wrote/drew what makes them special on a slip of paper. We discussed the importance of understanding "self" and how to speak for ourselves. We then concluded by making a grade wide "zero" that linked everyones experience at school together.

[Toothpaste Words]

From the data collected by all 3rd teachers there has been an increase in verbal bullying and calling out in class. Due to this information I decided to work with all third grade classes and discuss the impact of words. For each class we used or imagination and put all of the words we used in a day into a bottle of toothpaste. I then had students come up and squeeze toothpaste out of the bottle. The same students were called back up and asked to use toothpicks and put the words (toothpaste) back into the bottle. We figured out that it was hard to take back the words that we use/say. The class and I then had a discussion on the impact that words can have and how the positive words we could play a large role in a school day.

[Kindness Pizza]

For this lesson, Chef Mr. C was able to transform some 4th grade classes to a kindness pizza shop. We discussed the importance of kindness and how kindness is able to make each "slice" special. On each of the special toppings on the Kindness Pie, each 4th grade student wrote one kind thing that they have done in class for this school year. The 4th grade Kindness Chefs then glued there toppings onto the pizza. To close, I let the students know that they can look at themselves as a special slice of pizza in the class pie, and if one slice is missing then that is not a complete pizza. Each student plays a dynamic and integral role in each class and that notion must be celebrated!

[Special Stones]

To round out all grade level push-in lessons, for the fifth grade students we were able to create some special stones that allowed students to turn there stress into positive affirmations. All students had the opportunity to directly speak on stresses that they experience throughout the day. We were able to make connections from all students stressers and speak about shared experiences. Then the students learned about the importance of "positive self affirmations" and how these words can make the feelings of stress subside. The students then had the chance to choose from various colored rocks and randomly pick an affirmation phrase that they then put onto their selected rock. A select group of fifth grade students then placed the rocks throughout the fifth grade and main entrances so they can walk into school with some positive vibes.
