About me

Librarian, writer, sometimes artist.

I  live in rural Nova Scotia, where I'm a retired librarian. I've been a reader since the day I decoded Green Eggs and Ham, and have not looked back. I love living near the ocean, and will put my feet in just about any water, even if it is bone-chilling cold.

I grew up in the US, in Kentucky and Tennessee, and have lived in New Mexico, Georgia, and Oregon. In New Mexico, I lived on a school bus that was converted into a house. It was on repeated visits to the Oregon coast that the idea for Threshold  began, over 20 years ago! My husband Caleb &  I moved to Nova Scotia in 2005, and  have loved exploring the province, finding many out-of-the-way places where mermaids might hide. Plus, living in Canada, I get to use that extra U in words. Humour me!

I enjoy painting on cardboard, making collages, and arranging sea treasure. I love glitter, but am saddened by the environmental impact of traditional glitter. I like to work with colour; a blank wall or white space gives me shivers.  I also love to sew my own clothes and make quilts, as well as make mixed media art with fabric.

I believe that more pretty things need to fill our lives.

 Other things...

I love picture books. I was on the 2015 Caldecott Committee which chose The Adventures of Beekle: The Unimaginary Friend, by Dan Santat, as the medal winner. That experience got me firmly hooked on reading and reviewing picture books.

I am enamoured with Medieval manuscripts online.  The British Library has an amazing collection of digitised manuscripts that can keep me entertained for hours. One of the characters in Threshold is named after my favourite manuscript, the Luttrell Psalter
