Dr. Angela Feekery

Senior Lecturer, Massey University, New Zealand

Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy

With 24 years’ working as an educator and researcher, my passion lies in creating positive learning experiences, especially for ākonga (students) during critical transitions into tertiary learning and in preparation for work readiness. Grounded in research, my approach involves reciprocal learning partnerships, emphasising contextualised, constructive, experiential and reflective learning.

I have a varied teaching background including communication, academic writing, ESoL, Japanese history and sociology, science and business communication, and public relations. I currently co-coordinate a large first-year communication course as a lecturer in the School of Humanities, Media and Creative Communication at Massey University in Aotearoa, New Zealand.

My commitment to quality teaching centres on socio-constructive learner-focused pedagogy, which sees learning as a partnership between teachers and students.  I am passionate about supporting students to become capable communicators and discerning, ethical users of information.

My research interests centre on information and digital literacies in academic and professional contexts and communication. Being information and digitally literate means being able to use a range of information and communication technologies to find, evaluate and use relevant information ethically to extend understanding and create new knowledge in a range of contexts.  Engagement with these competencies are the foundation for learning how to learn, developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills, engaging in informed decision-making and ethical research practices, and communicating ideas effectively.

I aim to foster connectedness in both research and teaching through collaboration and authentic learning opportunities, basing tasks and assessments on real-life contexts and materials as much as possible.
