( 3 ) The video describes how the new approach system works.
( 2 ) The video describes how the "old" approach system worked.
( 4 ) The video contrasts descent profiles in the old system with the new one
On April 7, 2011, a new airspace structure was implemented for the Oslo area of responsibility. The new system was developed by AVINOR to enhance safety at hotspots, where flight paths of inbound and outbound traffic intersect. In addition to the safety aspect, considerable attention was devoted to increasing capacity and limiting emission of noise and greenhouse gases.
We are seeing red departure paths for jets passing below blue arrival paths at the circle marking a hotspot. At such intersections, aircraft are forced to level off to ensure sufficient vertical separation. For jets, level flight segments imply higher fuel consumption than otherwise necessary. By avoiding level flight segments, both noise impact and emissions are reduced.
In the new system, the point of intersection is moved further away. Flight paths for departing aircraft now pass above, well above, those of arriving aircraft. This improves safety and eliminates the need for leveling off. Incoming traffic is organized by a point-merge system in which arriving aircraft join one of two arcs concentric about a common merge point. Since aircraft on the same arc are equidistant from the merge point, landing sequence is determined by the timing of the inward turn from the arc. Aircraft descend from the arcs to the merge point and onto the final approach in a continuous descent, almost a glide, with minimal engine thrust, low emissions and reduced noise.
A typical descent profile prior to the introduction of the point merge system is illustrated by the orange lines showing many level segments. The green line illustrates a typical descent profile under the point merge system. Level flight segments are minimized even in peak traffic periods.
The point merge system is widely considered an important tool for allowing the aviation sector to reach its ambitious long-term goals related to safety, capacity and environmental impact.
