Engineering Co-op, Main Propulsion Machinery, Jan 2024 - Aug 2024
General Dynamics Electric Boat (GDEB) is a defense contractor that builds world-class submarines for the U.S. Navy.
At Electric Boat, I was a co-op within the Main Propulsion Machinery Department, focusing on Propulsors for Columbia Class submarines. Throughout my experience as a co-op, I took ownership of various projects, including designing and drafting load test fixtures for lifting and handling submarine propulsion components.
In addition, I created NAVSEA hand calculation documents analyzing structural failure modes, bolted joints, welds, and tolerance stack-ups for the load test fixtures, below-the-hook lifting and handling equipment, the alignment and hydraulic systems for the Propulsor assembly installation, and other components. I used ASME, ASTM, and FED-STD references to aid these calculations.
Furthermore, I conducted model interface control checks on submarine propulsor installation CAD models in Siemens NX, ensuring fasteners and holes were aligned. I completed drawing checks for below-the-hook lifting and handling fixtures and installation fixtures, outlining suggestions and flaws while adhering to ASME standards. I wrote technical documents detailing lifting and handling, storage and preservation, NDT, and load test procedures.
