Information systems security and legal compliance are now required to protect critical governmental and corporate infrastructure, intellectual property created by individuals and organizations alike, and information that individuals believe should be protected from unreasonable intrusion. In addition, the list of issues with the internet is large: privacy breaches, free speech vs. censorship, bias in supposedly ‘neutral’ data, the ease of stealing digital intellectual property, government surveillance and corporate data tracking, smart phone addictions, the spread of pornography, ‘fake news’ and the dissemination of disinformation. Proposed solutions include new laws, regulations, contractual agreements, new technologies, and voluntary actions. This course provides a basic foundation of legal and philosophical concepts to prepare students for challenges they may face in their careers, careers that may someday find solutions to the myriad problems the Internet has wrought.
