Animatronic Eye Mechanism

Inspired by Will Cogley's Animatronic Eye Mechanism YouTube video, I chose this project to familiariI chose this project to explore an area of robotics I had always found interesting but had not yet encountered in my coursework. I built a controllable eye mechanism using an Arduino, servos, and 3D-printed components, giving me hands-on experience with both the electrical and mechanical sides of mechatronics.
One of my favorite parts of this project was combining engineering with creativity. I painted the eyes by hand and experimented with the mechanism until I achieved the movement and appearance I wanted. The project gave me a better understanding of how small mechanical systems, electronics, and control can come together to create expressive motion.
In the future, I’d like to expand the design by adding additional animatronic mechanisms or integrating the eyes into a larger character system.

Inspired by Eben Kouao's DIY Arduino Robot Arm - Controlled by Hand Gestures project, I built my own version as a summer project to strengthen my understanding of robotics and electronics outside the classroom. At the time, I had not yet completed many electrical engineering labs, so the project became an opportunity to independently learn about servo motors, flex sensors, Bluetooth communication, and robotic control.
The system used a sensor glove to translate hand and finger movement into commands for the robotic arm. Building both the glove and arm helped reinforce programming concepts while also giving me practical experience integrating sensors, actuators, and mechanical components into one system.
I also wanted the project to feel personal, so I printed the components using pink ombré PLA to create the “pink engineer” aesthetic I had envisioned for the build.

After getting my first car, I realized the removable sunroof key was small, lightweight, and easy to misplace. Instead of relying on the original storage setup, I decided to design and 3D print a custom case that could stay in my car and securely hold the key and related components.
I modeled the enclosure around the actual dimensions of the tools and adjusted the design to make the case easy to identify, compact enough to store, and heavy enough to stay in place while driving. This was one of my earliest examples of using CAD and 3D printing to solve a small everyday problem with a custom physical design.
