Preparedness Tip - Emergency Road Kit
Recently when asked what vehicle emergency kit I would recommend, I would recommend building your own.
Here are the components I recommend:
First aid kit including tourniquet and pressure bandage: These critical elements are missing from many retail first aid kits. While 300 piece first aid kits may sound tempting, their contents typically won’t stop someone from bleeding to death. I highly recommend building your own first aid kit rather than buying one off the shelf.
Blankets/Emergency Mylar Blankets
Deep can with candle in it for heat
Road flares
Matches
Reflective safety vest
Mirror for signaling
Non-perishable food such as energy bars (look for bars with high heat tolerance)
Water
Long handled snow scraper with snow brush
Small shovel for clearing snow away from tires and tailpipe. It never snows in central Texas, right??
Window breaker/seatbelt cutter
Jumper cables
Rechargeable car jumper
Spare tire
Tire inflator
Small tool kit
Cell phone
Paper maps: if you are stranded in the middle of nowhere, a “no service” message won’t get you to Google Maps.
Flashlight or headlamp: A headlamp will free up both hands to allow you to change a tire or make other repairs.
On another preparation note, please be actively building up your food and water storage. Our stake presidency has asked us to have build a three month pantry and store one year of long-term staples.
