Concrete! The Roman invented it. We're reinvented it in and around 1825. It is the main part of our cities DNA together with steel, and we have used it now for approximate 200 years.
It is dirty! It is heavy to work with, and it destroys your body if you work with it every day for many years.
It always begins with a big hole in the ground. Then you have to fence it all in so you hardly can get around it. Then you slowly started to climb out of the mud hole cubic meter by cubic meter. And its time the labour inspector straight you at the right time on every single site. The new by a standard, that building site without space around was impossible to organise properly. Especially in that phase where we were doing work in the mud hole.
There was no space in and between for Andersen. The concrete was hardly dry on one site before he began to organise the next.
He began to dream about it. His concrete ghost started to show its face during the night. Was it 30 MN(meganewton) concrete we need to use tomorrow ore only 15 MN(meganewton). And then all project corrections that sometimes run after the state of work. And all the delay its crouse was newer finding understanding from those who mate them.
And Andersen! >>Why are you a week behind schedule?<<;
>>Because!!!!<<
Because! >>That half of my men are occupied with a concrete hammer, working there way through that foundation they cast last week.<<
Because! >>A fool has changed a drawing and moved the main cable to the whole building by request of a subcontractor we have never seen on our site.<<
Because! >>No one was trying to figure out how progress was in our work before they drag a vast amount of extra mand hours down over our heads.<<
Because! >>The the economy under our reference number shall pay for it, and within a month, everybody has forgotten why but can read, that we have used too many working hours at that chase.<<
Andersen`s temper was always just right under the surface, and the well knows, no mercy still was never far away for those who failed because they were going home on time after work without care.
But it also has a price for Andersen to engage in its job in that way. It did not promote his career. He began to see out into a future in a small apartment he hardly could pay, with a girlfriend he could not offer a living because the salary was so low and wherever he looked, he could only get an eye one a concrete ghost.
Discrete attempt to search job in the other company always ended up to yes; we can use you in the same job function than you have at Monberg&Thorsen Ltd. But you can not document ability and skill in other job function!
The concrete ghost exposed its face.
Few pictures of three more cases said it all.
It is not the easiest piece of concrete work I have been a part of, and it is obvious that my team leader and his men were knowing what they were doing.
For once we start above ground.
One single express covered it. A professional piece of iron bonding work is performed.
The shadow! Andersen was there.
Then Andersen`s concrete ghost arrive.
21 parts per thousand fall towards the recess. My form design works perfectly here.
The tanks can be emptied.
The shadow! Andersen was there.
And then back in the hole
It was deep this time. Before we could dig ourselves down, we have to bung up it all.
We drive the concrete piles in by nail-punch so we could grab the top-soil up from the surface. Not all of them will go down at that level we wanted.
Then all the piles top should be cut up at the right level. To men, a concrete hammer and two piles a day! There will be winter before we finished with that.
Solution! And old oil-barrel, and old madras to mute the sound, and a first string and bum!
And then all the work with the reinforcement and after that, my concrete ghost arrived with no sign of an end. It was huge foundation area this time and the concrete roller service us for weeks.
Before the end of that year, I was gone.
