Anandu P. was born and raised in Kollam district, located in the southern part of Kerala. His early fascination with the Earth’s diverse landscapes and the mesmerizing stars above fueled his passion for physics and space science, shaping his academic pursuits. After completing his Higher Secondary Education in 2015 from Sivaram NSS HSS Karicode under the Kerala Board of Higher Secondary Education, Anandu embarked on a journey in science with a clear vision.
With a DST-INSPIRE-SHE fellowship awarded by the Department of Science & Technology, Government of India, Anandu joined the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Kolkata in 2015 to pursue an Integrated BS-MS Dual Degree program. During his studies, he developed a deep interest in Earth System Sciences. Despite humanity's achievements in reaching distant celestial bodies like the Moon and other planets, the mysteries of Earth's geological processes intrigued him the most, particularly the challenges in understanding the depths of our planet.
IISER Kolkata provided Anandu with a strong foundation and opportunities to explore diverse fields within Earth Sciences. He undertook multiple internships at prestigious institutions across India, gaining valuable insights into atmospheric and geological processes. In the summer of 2016, he worked at the Advanced Centre for Atmospheric Radar Research (ACARR), Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT), under the guidance of Prof. K. Mohankumar and Dr. M.G. Manoj, studying the planetary boundary layer over the Gateway of the Indian Monsoon in Cochin. The following summer, in 2017, he contributed to research on the impacts of heatwaves in Indian metropolitan cities at the Climate and Glacier Modelling Lab (CGMLI), IISER Bhopal, under the mentorship of Dr. Pankaj Kumar.
Driven by a keen interest in atmospheric processes and their influence on weather and climate, Anandu pursued a final-year research project at ACARR, CUSAT, focusing on the increasing frequency of cyclonic storms over the Arabian Sea. His study yielded insightful results that aligned with subsequent cyclone observations, showcasing his ability to contribute meaningfully to climate science.
The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic altered Anandu's career trajectory. Although he was poised to join a leading university in the United States, the pandemic shifted his focus back to India. Undeterred, he cleared the GATE-2022 Geology exam and joined the Centre of Excellence in Disaster Mitigation & Management at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee.
Currently, Anandu is a researcher in the Weather and Climate Research Group of Prof. Piyush Srivastava at IIT Roorkee, dedicating his efforts to studying forest fire events in the Indian Himalayan region. His work focuses on developing an early warning system for forest fires, aiming to enhance disaster preparedness and resilience in the region. Through his academic journey and research contributions, Anandu continues to make significant strides in understanding and addressing complex environmental challenges.
Raman Charpak Fellowship 2024
The Raman–Charpak Fellowship programme is in honour of two Nobel Laureates in Physics, Prof C.V. Raman, Indian Nobel Laureate (1930) and Prof Georges Charpak, French Nobel Laureate (1992). The Fellowship was launched during the State visit of the President of France to India during in February, 2013. The aim is to facilitate the exchange of doctoral students between the two countries, in order to broaden the scope and depth of future engagements in Science, Technology and Innovation. This programme implemented by the Indo French Centre for Promotion of Advanced Research (IFCPAR/ CEFIPRA) aims at improving the doctoral skills of Indian and French students by providing them an opportunity to carry out part of their research work in a University / Research & Development Institute based in France or India respectively. This programme is now also open to French Master Students, who wish to spend some time in India in accordance to their curriculum. It aims at improving the Masters skills of French students by providing them an opportunity to carry out internship work in a University / Research Institute based in India.
