When teaching young learners, seeing things in action is the best way for them to see what they are learning. As a science and health educator, I believe wearable technology would greatly benefit students by enabling them to apply what they are learning to their own lives and the lives of their peers. Access to data for analysis will also familiarize students with data and give them additional skills for the future.
With the rapid growth of online media and the pressures that come with growing up online, students find healthy ways to interpret data, take their health into their own hands, and see it through a healthy lens.
In addition to this, looking at how health suggestions from online creators, AI, and health professionals could be taken and compared with each other over the course of the term to assess best practices for ideal health, and the assessment of biometrics via wearable tech. This is just one of the many ways that this tool could be used in an AP Health course.
Herz and its competitors are all working to improve control over health and access to health information for all their users, thereby proving not only innovative with this new fitness tracker but also in how it can be aligned with health learning in a classroom setting.
To implement this device in a classroom curriculum (1 term), I would start the term by introducing the tool and familiarizing students with the metrics and how to analyze the data the device provides. Concentrating on the different areas that the ring is tracking and structuring the different units around what is provided
For example
-Heart Rate variability-> finding a baseline, testing different workouts and their impact on heart rate, using data to analyze the impact of different workouts, testing official workouts vs viral workouts for cardiac exercise.
-Blood Oxygen saturation -> understanding what blood oxygen saturation means and how it relates to health and fitness, providing students with opportunities to create their own assessments for testing
-Sleep staging-> assessing the reason for good sleep hygiene and why it is important, and looking at class sleep data, creating sleep challenges for the class.
-Body temp trends-> assessing how body temperature interacts with other data
-Activity tracking-> constant activity tracker and analysis, challenging or low and high activity days to compare personal data, training with peer groups to see how different bodies respond to the same training
-Women's health-> assessing trends of students who feel comfortable sharing or looking at anonymous data
Create a final report on whether they would continue wearing one or not, and why, based on the data collected.
