In the following section, we'll go beyond the categories of apps and analyse other aspects like size and price that are crucial for applications on the Google Play Store
Although there is a wide range of apps available on the Google Play Store, most of the apps have been downloaded by a small number of people. For example, about 44% of apps have been installed fewer than 100k times.
Among the most popular downloads, that have been downloaded between 500 Million to 1 Billion plus are Whatsapp Messenger, Google Chrome, Skype, Gmail.
The majority of apps on Google Play Store are free to download (93%) whereas, Paid apps only comprise 7%
There are a lot of apps available outside the google play store for users to download which ultimately leads to the majority of apps being free of cost.
Although the apps are free to download, they may use several monetizing strategies like App advertising, In-app purchasing, and Subscriptions!
Although nearly 93% of apps available on the Play Store are free, A lot of categories had a greater number of paid apps than the free apps.
It can be seen that the majority of apps in categories like video players, travel and local, news and magazines, finance, communication are free, whereas, categories like tools, personalisation, medical, game, and family had the biggest number of paid apps available.
It can be clearly seen that the free apps receive more number of downloads than the paid apps. Hence, free apps manage to get tons of more users. This is particularly crucial for communication or network based apps.
With free apps, users tend to have lower expectations; for an instance, if a user downloads an app and it doesn't help them in their everyday life, they delete it. Concluding, users love experimenting with the free downloads however, are very cautious when it comes to downloading paid apps. They will download the paid apps only when they are super sure about those or have heard reviews about the app.
It can be seen that free or lower-cost apps have mixed ratings whereas paid apps mostly have higher or better ratings.
There are several reasons for this observation, mainly free apps are supported by a lot of advertisements and relatively ask for more permissions than the paid apps, which might lead to the user giving poor ratings.
The paid apps, on the other hand, have a lesser number of advertisements and better quality content. Such apps also provide a better interface and user experience.
A majority of apps that have been installed by the users are of nearly 15-25 MB or 72-82 MB.
The larger the size of the app, the more data it will consume while installing. This is a major drawback for users with limited data plans.
Also, due to limited or lack of storage available in their devices, users prefer installing apps that are smaller in size so that they don't have to clear the space to install applications.
However, the second highlighted section clarifies that the quality and architecture of the app also really matters and if the application is worth the space, the user might install it.
