Action research, guides and toolboxes

Throughout my experience as an action researcher I have developed a set of guides and toolboxes, see below for some key outcomes to guide transformations in the food system

Re-scaling urban food governance: global and national city food networks

Urban food governance is expanding beyond individual cities. This report presents the first study of key global and national city food networks, comprising a total of 13 initiatives that together represent more than 400 cities across the world. This research analyses the functioning of city-networks, current strengths and challenges as well as an exploration of the relationship between networks themselves. The report allows to understand key differences between initiatives as well as challenges ahead to scale up and out the urban food revolution.

Meeting of city food networks 2017

In the 3rd Annual Gathering and Mayors’ Summit, I convened a meeting of 15 city food networks as part of my role in the Scientific Committee with the aim to exchange current practices and establish linkages between these initiatives. The document on the right summarizes the main debates and outcomes of this meeting.

This action-based research project focuses on the input from 100 grassroots stakeholders from different UK geographies, as well as a close collaboration between Sustainable Food Cities and Cardiff University. The result is a toolbox providing evidence of impact of place-based approaches to food against key health, economic and environmental outcomes and their indicators of progress. The tool is intended to:

1- provide key stakeholders with a clear and robust collation of evidence and indicators of success;

2- help both existing and interested 'practitioners' to secure support, plan, implement, monitor and evaluate the impact of their sustainable food programmes.

This guide is part of a collective effort to provide motivation and support for those actors interested in building more sustainable food systems in urban contexts. This document has been developed under the framework of Foodlinks, a European project where civil society organizations, policy makers and academics have come together to share and co-produce knowledge around Urban Food Strategies (UFS) with the aim of furthering the political, practical and academic agendas. Far from proposing a recipe to develop UFS, we have compiled distinct motivations, measures, ideas, processes and examples that we hope are useful to inspire action towards more sustainable and just food systems for all.

Guia sobre consejos alimentarios (Castellano y Catalán)

In the last years I have participated in the Cardiff Food Council, worked closely with the Sustainable Food Cities network in the UK and supported cities such as Valencia and Barcelona in devising their urban food strategies. One of the results of these collaborations is a guide on food policy counsils in Spanish, edited by the Revista por la Soberania Alimentaria, Biodiversidad y Culturas. Here, I explain the process of setting food policy councils and provide some key pointers to reflect on their potential transformative capacity.

Participatory Action Research with Local Communities

Building a more just and sustainable food system requires changes at different levels, from our day-to-day eating choices to global institutional arrangements and from food producers and consumers to policy makers and academics. A key element in the transformation of the food system is how we share and create new knowledge that supports this transition towards a food system that delivers good food for all.

This briefing paper aims to contribute to a more engaged research process by describing and reflecting on one experience of Participative Action Research (PAR): live projects with students at Cardiff University.
