Community college students are more likely to come from underserved populations and are inclined to feelings of self-doubt in academic settings. When learning online, our students need to know they have an instructor who cares and is there to support them, and that they are part of a vibrant learning community. Effective online teachers mindfully cultivate their presence at the course level and one-on-one with students. These interactions foster a relationship based on trust, which is the foundation of a learning community.
When I started the humanizing class, I was sending out welcome letters, including introduction posts to build class community, and using some video in my class.
I understood I should do more, but I was not aware that my students might think I was a robot.
After learning about the importance of humanizing interactions and all parts of the class, I am in the process of adding opening videos to each module, short Adobe Spark videos for concepts, subbing in some flipgrids instead of discussion boards, & using zoom office hours.
I am also looking forward to trying video and voicethreads more in my grading.
Where I am headed is to add in more moments of authentic interaction, I plan to add weekly digital postcards for my students & options for conferencing, as well as a getting to know you zoom meeting so students can see me and their fellow students regularly.
Additionally, I am working on adding in blooper reels to my classes, so students can see I am not perfect.
To help humanize myself, I have created welcome videos for my class, so they can know me and know how to navigate the class.
Because I believe it is important for the students to connect with you in every module, I have created videos for all my modules that give an overview of the modules & explain the highlights.
Since I think students learn better when they hear you delivering the content, I have added explainer video for each concept that we learn in class.
This helps the site not be so text dense and also invites students to participate in the cuber classroom if they have additional questions about the concept.
