In the connected era, students will be most successful after college if they have a digital presence that promotes their unique abilities and strengths. Online instructors are poised to play a powerful role in the development of our students’ digital footprint. Students aspire to be like their instructors who actively model safe and professional use of digital tools and resources. Effective online teachers understand that engaging students in the web is an important part of becoming digitally literate and, as such, learning is not tied to a textbook.
In my EWRT 1A at De Anza College, I was having students think deeply about what it means to be a digital citizen and have a digital presence,
Additionally, I was augmenting assignments with chances for students to upload their writing to public spaces online.
Working with students to create online portfolios of their work in my EWRT 1A at De Anza College and my English 1S & English 1T classes at Foothill.
By creating an ePortfolio, student will be able to have a web presence that shows off their writing and can be linked to their digital resumes.
I am in the process of writing a completely OER text for my English 2 Critical Thinking class and my English 1A class.
I believe the future of education is living documents that are created and easily updated online to reflect current trends and ideas. I am hoping to be fully OER by Fall 2021,

I personally believe that if want to create responsible and ethical digital citizens, we need to make them aware of the digital ethical conundrums and issues that are facing people online today and in the future. In my English classes, I always make sure to include readings and writing opportunities about current ethical concerns in the digital space because it helps students learn how to navigate the issues that are surrounding them every time they log on to any device.
This is an example of one of my discussion prompts in my EWRT 1A.
Because I want to create lasting rather than disposable assignments, I created an online ePortfolio that students can link to their linkedin to show their writing and their work.
It was a great way to teach students how to write a bio, curate their writing for an audience, and create an identity online.
Below are two examples of a ePortfolio that my student Maggie did last Winter. By allowing students the freedom of expression to create a professional portfolio of their work, it empowered them with an opportunity to create something they can use to shape their digital presence. I was so proud to see all the variety of ways that students chose to present themselves.
This non-disposible assignment allowed students to leverage digital technologies to share their writing and their work with wider audiences, and have an lasting impact beyond a student’s experience in the class.
