Hi, I’m Amy! I’m currently an ASL/English interpreting student at Salt Lake Community College, working toward my goal of becoming a certified interpreter. Before this path, I spent over nine years as a veterinary technician in emergency medicine. That experience taught me how to stay calm when things get chaotic, communicate clearly under pressure, and support people (and animals!) in high-stress situations. Those same skills are ones I bring with me into interpreting.
I’ve always loved learning about people and culture, which is why I’ve also studied humanities, anthropology, gender studies, and intercultural communication. These areas opened my eyes to different perspectives and helped me understand the importance of cultural awareness in making communication truly accessible. On campus, I’ve been part of SLCC’s ASL Club, where I’ve helped plan events and learned the value of teamwork and leadership.
Outside of school, I love to travel and I enjoy anything outdoors. Hiking, camping, and traveling are some of my favorite ways to recharge. When the weather turns cold, I shift into cozy mode with books, video games, and Lego builds at home with my husband and our pets.
At my core, I value connection, communication, and growth. I try to approach challenges with an open mind and see them as opportunities to improve. I’m excited to continue learning, building relationships, and creating spaces where everyone has access to communication.
