Impact of Knowledge on Reading
Knowledge plays a prominent role on students' ability to comprehend what they read. Studies have shown that students with greater background knowledge on a topic have an easier time understanding complex text about that topic than students with stronger reading abilities and less background knowledge. This is why building students background knowledge is important when preparing them to tackle new, complex text.
Text Sets
Text sets are a series of coherently linked text that help build students knowledge of a topic or idea. Text sets can be used to help build students' knowledge by providing them with multiple experience with related content and vocabulary. Students are better prepared to tackle more challenge text once they have the tools needed to better understand the text.
Guidebooks & Knowledge
Guidebooks are designed to intentionally provide students with the background knowledge they will need to comprehend the complex anchor text. Each unit implements a series of supplemental and supportive text that are related to the key concepts and ideas present in the unit. When taught in the suggested order, the students' knowledge should be naturally developed through multiple exposures to different related text.
Indirect Vocabulary
Indirect vocabulary is gained through students reading of selected materials. This form of vocabulary development is much more meaningful than isolated, direct vocabulary instruction. In this method, students are naturally being absorbed in new or unfamiliar words through reading and are able to make connections and determine a meaning based on context clues. Indirect vocabulary instruction is part of every guidebook lesson. Students are constantly learning and expanding their vocabulary through their reading of the different text in a text set.
Volume of Reading
Volume of reading is driven by students' own personal interest. It is an important tool that helps foster reading skills, vocabulary, and natural love of reading. Fostering a love of reading will help students want to take on the more complex text they are presented with in the guidebooks.
