The highlight of each year are the three state conventions. Typically over 500 high school students from Connecticut, New York, and Massachusetts gather in one location and debate important issues over the course of a weekend. There is also time built in to experience the surrounding area (i.e. Downtown Boston, the Capitol in Washington DC).
Our region also holds two one-day regional conferences, one in the fall and another in the spring, somewhere in New York City. There are also one day “megacons” and “minicons” throughout the year. Important note, the one day events are hosted by JSA and not chaperoned Amity events. As you can see, there are lots of opportunities to discuss politics and current events not only with fellow Amity students, but also with students from different areas and backgrounds. It is a great way to meet people with similar interests across the northeast!
The NES is divided into two parts: ECR(Empire Constitution Region) and NER(New England Region). Connecticut and New York make up the ECR, while Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine make up the NER.
Positions are broken down from greatest to least. The NES has positions that members of the ECR and NER can run for. The ECR and NER have positions that you can run for, but you must be in the region your running for. Chapters have positions that everyone in the chapter can run for.
There are four elected positions in our chapter:
President: Peter Savelyev
Vice President: Christina Burland
Treasurer: Olivia Frankiewicz
Secretary: June Lin
Director of Debate: Alison Bowler
Director of Member Engagement: Andrew Gilbride
Chapter Agents: Marin Korenaga, Eveleen Jiang
The ECR and NER positions handle one days. These are very important because they allow for regions to meet up. There are two elected positions: Mayor and Vice Mayor. You can only run for your region(ECR).This year our ECR Mayor is Scott Weinstein and our ECR Vice Mayor is Robert Farbman.
The Positions for the NES handle convention. These are very important because it allows both the ECR and the NER to meet up, debate, etc. There are two elected positions: Governor and Lieutenant Governor. This year our Governor is Dev Arbeiter and our Lieutenant Governor is Peggy Liu.
Both NES positions have cabinets (which are non-elected positions). To recieve these positions you can apply for them.
The ECR and NER both have a cabinet which consist of mostly the same jobs. You can only apply to your region.
Chapters have cabinets too, for these you also apply.
There are many positions, and based on how involved you want to be you can aim for Governor to Amity's Director of Debate or anywhere in between. You could just be a member which is equally as fun.
