Out Reach in Eggers Middle School in Hammond, Indiana

On December 8 2023, I visited Eggers Middle School in Hammond, Indiana to talk about the use of programming (or coding) in the area of High Energy Physics. I had visited the school as a part of Argonne Lab's outreach program called hour of code.

I had an opportunity to talk to students from 6 to 8 grades about coding and high energy physics. In overall, I talked to 3 groups of students. I gave a brief overview about the lab and its activities, myself, the concept of coding and high energy physics. The math teacher, Mrs. Sandred Rushdan did an amazing job organizing and facilitating the activities. I was very impressed and inspired by the dedication she gave to her students for their development.

Here is the website to the school [https://www.hammond.k12.in.us/schools/eggers-middle-school/index].

The school is named after Dr. Henry Eggers, a physician, who played a significant role during the US Civil Rights movement and had a huge role to provide quality education to kids in Hammond which is a predominantly black population.

I had some interesting questions from the students (for some reason revolving around the presenter (me) :
1. What did I want to become when I was in school?

2. What made me choose Physics in general?

3. What programming language do you use in your day to day life?

4. Who was the favorite teacher in my school?

5. What classes do I need to take to become a physicist?

6. What was your dream career when you were in school?
