PI: M. Amir Siddiq

Professor (UK Reader)

School of Engineering University of Aberdeen Aberdeen, UK amir.siddiq@abdn.ac.uk

Dr Siddiq is a professor of mechanical engineering at University of Aberdeen, where he is leading his own research group on structural integrity; data driven finite element methods; machine learning based materials modelling; digital twins for high pressure and wind energy systems; advanced manufacturing; and degradation & failure in corrosive environment.

Dr Siddiq holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from University of Stuttgart, Germany. He is also a Fellow of Higher Education Academy of UK, a Chartered Engineer and a member of IMechE UK. He has been ranked in the list of top 2% world scientists with highest impact in the year 2020-21 (Stanford University Survey & Elsevier). He has over 20 years of industrial, research and teaching experience in the UK, Germany, Middle East and South Asia. Dr Siddiq has published over 80 articles in leading journals and conferences (h-index: 21 Google Scholar) with the highest impact factor of ~8. He is also a member of advanced manufacturing leadership group as part of Scottish research partnership in engineering.

Currently, He is working on several industrial projects funded by Shell, Chevron, and NZTC. Previously, he worked at University of Strathclyde (UoS) and Advanced Forming Research Centre (AFRC), where he worked on simulating advanced manufacturing processes funded by BOEING, Rolls Royce plc, Barnes Aerospace, Timet, Aubart & Duval. Before this he worked at Robert BOSCH GmbH, SKF GmbH, Max-Planck Institute for Metal Research, KAUST, University of Sheffield, and NED University.

Dr Siddiq has been involved in developing undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) programmes of international repute, such as subsea engineering, advanced mechanical engineering and renewable energy engineering. He is deputy programme lead for UG mechanical engineering. He has developed several UG and PG modules (offshore structural integrity, renewable wind energy, etc.). His wind energy course is one of the most in-demand course with over 180 PG students registered during 2021-22 session. His passion for student learning and teaching has earned him two nominations and one win for the Best Lecturer Award so far.

If you catch him outside of work, he is a competitive cricketer - played in several leagues. He has won a number of awards including best all-rounder award during 2007-2008 playing for Sheffield University Staff Cricket Club.

He is the founder of Professor 3MEC which is striving to help students and engineers learn about mechanical engineering, materials science and computational mechanics for free. More info can be found on https://www.professor3mec.com/
