Reflecting on the affects of gentrification and what that means for society at large
Image reads: "Now that the neighborhood is nice, why do I have to move?"
What gentrification is, who it affects, and why we should pay more attention to it
Gentrification is the act of changing a neighborhood, particularly a poorer one, with an influx of wealthy businesses and homes, thereby displacing the low income residents who live there.
We need to pay attention to gentrification because although there are cases where the lower income residents thrive in a new environment, more often than not it causes food deserts, loss of support systems, displaced families, and loss of culture.
This issue is incredibly important to me because as someone who grew up in low income neighborhoods, having your sense of familiarity and community and close knit ties with people who you share common experiences with, severed by rich people who are not trying to uplift the current residents, it leaves a nasty taste in my mouth of the reminder that poorer citizens are considered second class citizens and treated as unworthy of things that would improve their quality of life immensely.
With this project, I hope to show you guys the negative affects gentrification has currently and the positive things it could bring about, if we didn't have such greedy, exploitative, and idealistic capitalistic people in control.
