My social problem was gentrification: The act of displacing residents of low income neighborhoods in an effort to bring in more revenue and more desirable looking residents. This social issue is incredibly important to me because of my own lived experiences in low income neighborhoods, living in immense poverty, and the way people would treat you or look at you. That is something that you never forget; the look of embarrassment for me and my family. This is a social issue because it disproportionately affects minorities and besides displacing them physically, it creates mental anguish, spikes in stress and depression, loss of culture and support networks, loss of reliable transportation, lower life expectancy, and lower education rates,. We need to the benefits of gentrification to these neighborhoods instead of pushing them out and ostracizing those who could most benefit form them. I am glad I used a just practice framework because it pushed me to step outside my personal bubble with my own ideals, expectations, standards, and morals and by doing so I was able to see upsides to counter arguments and to reflect on the most pressing of issues of gentrification, that being poverty. Without gentrification, we still have poverty, but preying on impoverished neighborhoods instead of uplifting them will never sit right with me. Poverty is a huge issue that is the root of many other issues and it needs to be destroyed but in order to do that we have to take it one day, one breath, and one moment at a time.
