  • The Only Road (Simon & Schuster, 2016) 2017 Américas Award winner.
  • Malaika’s Costume, (Groundwood Books, 2016) a 2017 Américas Book Award Honorable Mention, by Nadia L. Hohn and illustrated by Irene Luxbacher , is narrated in the first person by Malaika, a young girl who dreams of being a peacock as carnival time approaches. This is the first year Malaika’s mother will be living far away in Canada, where she has gone seeking work in order to support Malaika and her grandmother. The story is accompanied by richly textured, colorful illustrations by Irene Luxbacher. With a lexile level of 630, this book is appropriate for grade 3. CURRICULUM UNIT

  • Ada’s Violin (Simon & Schuster, 2016) by Susan Hood and illustrated by Sally Wern Comport is a 2017 Américas Book Award winner, tells the true story of Ada, a young girl from the slum of Cateura, Paraguay, who learns to play a violin made of trash. CLASP Member Institutional Resources

Many CLASP member institutions have tangible resources that are available to educators nationwide. These may take the form of lending libraries of books and films, or traveling trunks (also known as traveling suitcases or culture boxes). Relevant items and curricula are available through the CLASP website.

Vanderbilt University's Center for Latin American Studies

Culture Boxes: Created to support cultural awareness among K-12 students, each culture box consists of materials and curriculum from a country in Latin America to create a stimulating, hands-on experience for students. Countries represented in the culture boxes include: Peru, Honduras, Mexico, Guatemala, Ecuador, Colombia, Cuba, and Brazil.

Curriculum Resources: The Center for Latin American Studies offers books, lesson plans, multimedia materials and other resources to help teachers incorporate Latin American content into their classrooms.

Lending Library: Center for Latin American Studies maintains a comprehensive collection of books, lesson plans, multimedia materials and other resources to help teachers incorporate Latin American content into their classrooms.

University of Florida's Center for Latin American Studies

Traveling Suitcase: The Center for Latin American Studies offers traveling suitcases, packed with cultural artifacts from Latin America for teachers to use in their classroom.

Latin American Web Resources: The Center is working with K–12 teachers to create a series of resources on a variety of Latin American topics to be used by individual teachers or in conjunction with professional development events.

Curricular Resources: The Latin American Resource Center has produced a variety of curricula, media packets, and curriculum guides to help you bring Latin America into the classroom.

Professional Development: The professional development opportunities offered through the Latin American Resource Center for teachers to learn innovative strategies for introducing Latin America into the K-12 curriculum.

Lending Library: Over 4,000 items about Latin America is available for free short-term loan to all K-16 educators around the country.
