An escaped Kentucky slave and one of the first to enlist with the Niagara-based Black Regiment, Hardy burns with anger. His relationship with Barclay is combustible, while shared ambitions and fears with fellow Canadians and an admiration for Tecumseh’s integrity inspire a contrasting hope for the future – the hope of buying his own farm and home for his family. However, a confrontation with ‘Old Cyrus’ Tiffany provokes a clearer sense of what it means to be human and free.
