The Grand Council of Australia, was originally formed from the Councils within Victoria and Western Australia then holding warrants under the Grand Council for England etc. These Councils sought independence and in due course approval was received and this Grand Council was erected in Melbourne, Victoria, on 18th February 1991.

The Western Australian Councils (*) themselves became independent on 15th March 1997. However that Grand Council dissolved on 31st January 2022, and their extant warrants were returned to this Grand Council.
Three Councils constituted to meet in South Australia under English warrants: Abram (1984-2017), Isaac (1985-2014) and Jacob (1985), were brought under the aegis of this Grand Council on 28th August 2002, and the English-warranted Councils in Queensland also decided to come within this Grand Council on 28th April 2012, being Duke of York (1900), Berserker (1972) and Brisbane St Lawrence (1981).
