My approach to linguistics is rationalist: linguistically significant data is a reflection of human cognition and must be interpreted in the light of a theory of linguistic knowledge. For phonology, this means that the physical properties of raw sound emerge from the structure of phonological knowledge, but that knowledge is abstract, organized along principles determined by the structure of human minds. Phonological theories are claims about how humans organize linguistic sound, and useful theories allow for generalizations to be made concerning sound patterns; they go beyond the narrow scope of raw physical measurements, increasing our understanding of the fundamental nature of the human capacity for organizing linguistic sound.
