Supervised by Professor Daniel Price and Professor Andy Tomkins.
The project was motivated by Andy’s recent paper (Tomkins, Martin and Cawood 2024), where they hypothesised that during the Ordovician period, roughly 460 million years ago, the intensification of the ice age and spike in micrometeorites was caused by a debris ring around the Earth.
Set up the Tillotson Equation of State in PHANTOM. Tested a uniformly dense sphere on a circular orbit at Earth's Roche limit. The object becane tidally disrupted, forming an elongated shape, or disc.
Calculated the climate effect from a ring shadow and found that blocking about ~7% of radiation by a ring would be enough to cause global average temperature to drop to the level during the ice age.
