• The Middle Ages. During the 11th – 14th century a joust was a meeting or duel to unhorse your opponent. Not much chivalry existed during this time. Using lance, sword and other weapons.
• In the late Middle Ages the people looked at jousting as tournament. Chivalry of the sport comes to play with knights seeking honor and nobility.
• The 17th century began ring tilt, in which men on horseback used accuracy with a lance and rings.
• 1634 2nd Lord Baltimore, Cecil Calvert, founded colony is the first record of jousting in the new world.
• The Mid 19th century ring tournament's raised money for civil war. Along with Churches hosting tournament's. A few of these church jousting events still exist today over 150 years later.
• 1958 our club was founded to encourage the amateur rider.
• 1962 Henry J. Fowler Sr. made Maryland’s official state sport Jousting. For his love of the sport.
• 2016 AJC made its home track at the Historic Jerusalem Village
No prior jousting experience is required. Just a horse, we can help with the rest in getting you started. A great family sport as you don't compete with age groups but skill. Classes are just $10 which includes 9 chances in scoring a ring and 3 turns down the track, more in event of a tie-off. You may ride in two jousts per season by the third joust you must become a club member.
Club Membership $10 per person or $25 for household family.
You will also chose a jousting name to be called when you charge down the track. People tend to use their farm names, location, Horse name, favorite saying.
There is no mandatory tack just proper safe riding attire. Western, English, or something even rarer.
A parade and national anthem is usually presented where you can ad some pageantry to your horse and self. That can just be your regular clothes, renaissance garb, club or farm wear.
