Hi, I’m Amanuel. I am a Ph.D. student in Computer Science and Engineering at the University of South Florida, advised by Professor Zhao Han. My background is in automation, robotics, and robot learning, with more than two years of research experience developing assistive robotic systems for healthcare applications at the Sano Center for Computational Medicine. My research focuses on building intelligent robotic systems that can operate reliably and adaptively alongside people. In particular, I am interested in robot learning and autonomy, shared control and human–agent collaboration, and understanding and explaining failures in learned robot policies.

My paper on human-in-the-loop robot learning was presented at IEEE VR 2024 in Orlando, USA. We present HiLoTEL, a virtual-reality framework that enables users to supervise learned robot behaviors and intervene when needed, allowing human corrections to support task execution and learning after deployment.

My standalone, ROS 2–based VR interface for robot-learning data collection was accepted as a poster at the IEEE UK and Ireland RAS Chapter Conference in Sheffield, UK. The interface supports both passthrough mode for on-site interaction with a physical robot and VR teleoperation through a synchronized digital twin, enabling intuitive robot control and demonstration-data collection for imitation learning.
